You are to design a private school for middle school children, located in the rich urban context of Providence. The school’s “through site” will require you to consider a vertical organization of spaces, and to be mindful of bringing in natural light. The front (street elevation) should not exceed its neighboring buildings, although most of the building will have a height limit of 60 feet. Once again, you are to carefully consider the structural grid of the school and its relationship to the architectural elements. Later in the semester you will be designing a Temple (Religious Facility) on a portion of an adjoining site. The school and temple need to have a relationship to one another and be joined by a meaningful outdoor space located on the site behind the school. As you design your school, keep in mind how the path of the sun might impact the outdoor space for your school as well as the future Temple.
In addition to the shared exterior space, you are asked to provide outdoor space specifically for the school. You will determine the function of this outdoor space, based on your design intension. The school’s outdoor space may be an active play area, a contemplative garden, a formal gathering space or entry court, a vegetable garden, an outdoor classroom, or some other function. The outdoor space may be located at grade, on a roof deck, on a series of garden terraces, or at any point within the complex of the school. It may or may not have a direct relationship to the shared exterior space between the school and temple.
